It doesn't matter who the relationship is with - a spouse, partner, parent, friend, child, coworker, etc. - getting two people to function together smoothly all the time is really hard. Sometimes it's about communication and unmet needs. Sometimes it's about boundaries and respect. And sometimes it's about deciding if it is time for the relationship to end. Regardless of the type of stress or tension, together we can find a way to improve your relationships.
During times of high stress, we often use unhealthy or damaging ways to make it through. Maybe you lose your temper and lash out. Maybe you over-drink, over-eat, or over-take medication. During times of high stress, we often use unhealthy or damaging ways to make it through. Maybe you lose your temper and lash out. Maybe you over-drink, over-eat, or over-take medication. Or maybe you simply lose track of yourself and your priorities. With the right support, you can learn better strategies to manage life's stress without risking your health or relationships. Together we can find healthier ways that work for you.
Life is full of plot twists. It can be helpful to talk to someone outside of your family or friends to get a fresh perspective, new ideas, and objective feedback. Because no one has exactly the same experiences, everyone has different needs and challenges. Each person also has unique strengths and survival skills that have allowed him or her to get to this moment. Most people overlook, underestimate, or down play their strengths and skills. I try to help my clients get an accurate assessment of their problem and what skills they already possess to fix it. Some people may need to be heard and encouraged, and others might need help getting unstuck and learning healthier skills. Regardless of the challenge, there cannot ever be a one size fits all approach.
My clients would say that our counseling sessions are laid back, informal, and don't feel like "therapy." I believe if we are comfortable, then the effort required for progress doesn't seem so hard. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, coffee or a snack, laughter, and even the occasional visit from a "therapy dog" (with your permission, of course).
I use traditional talk therapy in conjunction with other proven therapy tools such as:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
EMDR
Art Therapy
Biofeedback
Physical activity (walking sessions, therapeutic boxing, Yoga, etc.
Individual Counseling for Adults
Individual sessions provide ample time to tell your story and to feel heard without having to censor yourself. It allows a deeper level of honesty and the use of the approach that best fits you. We can discuss the value of bringing anyone else to your session as needed.
The first session or consultation includes discussing the problem, identifying what is working and what is not, establishing your goals, using any appropriate testing, and developing a plan for working together.
Tele-therapy session, Bill payment, or Copay payment.
Payment will be collected at the beginning of your session. It can be paid with cash, a credit card, or check.
Self pay rates:
$125 per Counseling Session
$150 for Initial Consultation
Contact me for accepted insurance companies. Please obtain any authorizations required by your insurance.
For your first counseling session, you will need to bring your insurance card, any authorization information from your insurance company, and a form of payment. By the end of the first session, we will have identified a few of your goals and how we might achieve them. If I am not qualified, experienced, or confident in my ability to help, I will recommend other options and make any necessary referrals.
To have more time during your first appointment, you can request that I email you the intake forms to complete and bring to your session. They are in Word format and include some basic information and consents.
Studies show that the relationship you have with your therapist is even more important than the specific therapy techniques used. If at any point you feel like I am not "on your page" or not making progress like you hoped, please tell me so we can address it. This feedback is important so I can help you achieve your goals as quickly as possible. However, if you don't feel like we are a good fit, please tell me so we can consider referring you to someone you will feel more comfortable with.
Therapists are bound by confidentiality laws similar to doctors and lawyers. You must sign a formal consent in order for me to give any information on your behalf. The exceptions to those rules are in cases where I am concerned that you will hurt yourself or others or in medical emergencies.
Please give me 24 hours notice before canceling an appointment. If you do not give me notice or No Show an appointment, you will be charged a $100 fee. If you miss or cancel too frequently then we will need to consider other options.
While I try to provide supportive counseling when needed, there will be times when I will not be available. In cases of emergency, please call 911, Emergency Response (ERS) 309-671-8084, or go to your nearest Emergency Room.
